Life Never Turns Out How You Think it Will

Letting Go

Life never turns out how you think it will!

It is strange, annoying, frustrating and confusing. You set out to do something good, you plan, create and expect something to happen….

Oops, that expectation is literally a heavy weight hanging over this beautiful thing.

This weight looks like your hopes, desires, fears and limitations.

How on earth are you expecting this brand new thing to grow? It already has to fit into your ideal of what you wanted and if it doesn’t it might disappoint you. On top of that, it has to deliver all your expectations and eliminate all your fears as well.

Confused… Imagine how it feels. Imagine if this new idea or creation of yours was a person. This little person is to be a brand new business or a new art piece, nail design, a new application, course, social post… Any and all new ideas.

That is a lot of pressure for a little idea and it may well just get overwhelmed with it all.

I was told that I was getting in the way of my success, I still am if I am honest. I hold onto the expectation I have of the outcome and don’t allow the universe to do its thing. I had to ask myself the other day what it was I was trying to achieve. I was so so close to closing everything down and giving up.

This happened after yet another disaster, the pressure of the debt I have because of COVID-19, the development of my business and the fact that I just wasn’t happy.

I lay in bed looking out of the window at the black sky and thought if I shut my business down and give up what would I do. I started to make plans around the numerous ambassador roles I have been offered and of course, I have Be Creative, a plan formed in my mind …. and then I realised something with a snort. Loud enough to stir Jon.

I realised with a start that I was planning to do what you are doing right now…..!!!!!!

That is when the truth hit me. I am planning to recreate what I have now because I love what I do. My work, writing this, developing nail art lessons, working with celebrated nail pros and planning some great content for The Mel & Sam Show is what I love.

I don’t love the struggle and the hustle, but I realised something at 3 AM that night. If I just went to work and enjoyed what I did at the moment of each little creation. If I let go of the expectation, the need to succeed and the struggle to survive, but just enjoyed the process – I would let go of the things that are holding me back.

I can give away everything I own as long as I can continue to create, to paint, to laugh with other nail techs and inspire and be inspired by my friends in the industry. I would love every minute of my day.

So why don’t we?

Have you heard of the Black Dog and the White Dog analogy? The Black Dog would be your darker thoughts, the worries, fears and all things which hold you back in a web of anxiety. The Black Dog represents depression. The White Dog is your lighter side, the possibilities, your happiness and joy at everything regardless of the outcome.

If you had both dogs and had to feed them one bowl of food, which dog are you feeding? Which one is getting stronger and which one is wasting away to nothing?

So by letting go of your Black Dog and all it represents, giving yourself the freedom to just love doing what you do, you will always be a success. The universe will find a way to reward you for this joy.

When you start putting on the breaks with a new idea or signing up to a new course, then work through these 3 simple steps.

1. Idea

2. Create

3. Let go

  1. Formulate your idea, enjoy this process and the possibilities.
  2. Create, actually get your hands dirty, don’t put this off, find the time and energy because this is when you start to feed the White Dog.
  3. Let go of anything that stops number 2. Remove these thoughts from your mind that hold you back. Make time and decide what you can give up. Netflix will be there next week. Remove the idea of what you will “Get’ from the creative above, just watch what you’re are doing and enjoying.

I was inspired by my 30 Days Portrait Challenge through Sketchy, to create a nail art and nail application course, with 5 other celebrated and award-winning educators. We have all been working hard over the last few months to bring you a set of lessons, 30 of them. which will help you in your business and your confidence.

Now you need to decide which set of values you hold that will say yes to investing in this course and in your self.

Check out this link – doors open 1st October to sign up, the course starts 1st November.
